Back in action

Wow, I haven't been blogging for ages. Maybe I shall take this opportunity to update on what has been happening since the end of last semester.

As soon as exams ended in May, I went back to Penang, my hometown. Missed my family so much. For the first time since leaving for Singapore for studies, I took a plane back to Penang. The flight I booked departs from Senai Airport which is in Johor and the departure time is at 10am. I am aware that if I travel from NUS to Senai Airport that same morning I might not be able to reach the airport on time. So I decided to travel one day before and spend the night before the flight at the airport. It was the second time I spend the night at the airport. The first time was when I went bagpacking in Penang Island, I actually spent the night at Penang INternational Airport. I could not really sleep that whole night so guess what I did? I played counter strike! HAHA...
Counter Strike!

The Gents at Senai Airport

Basically in Penang, I spent most of my time with my family. I could say I went shopping at least 4 times a week. The prices of stuffs in Penang is so much cheaper, everywhere I go I would unconsciously convert Malaysian Ringgit to SIngapore Dollar and feel it's so damn cheap. I buy and buy and buy, I guess it's the only period where I get to shop like a shopaholic. When I reside in SIngapore I basically do not shop. THe things in SINgpaore is so expensive after converting to RM. I really enjoyed bringing my sister and my mother out. Brought my sister to some children arcade and playground center in shopping malls.

I also took this opportunity when I am back in Penang to catch up with some of my close friends. Me and my form 6 classmates went for steamboat and I also had a karaoke session with my friends. The karaoke session only cost RM5.50 for 3 hours and you get one drink free too. The place is well decorated and sound system is good. On the other hand, when I went for karaoke session in Singapore, the cheapest I've been to is S$10 for 4 hours and free flow of drinks, not to mention, the sound system sucks.

Singing K at Sunway

So when I was back home, the one thing which frustrates me a lot is the lousy connection by streamyx. It is super slow and I can't do many things. It takes ages to load a page up to a point I gave up on going online. Just wanna sshow you the condition of my workplace at home. :)

During one month period, I also had the chance to do some charity work. I volunteered to collect and send cakes and foodstuffs to the orphanage, old folks home, and home for the mentally challenged. My whole car was filled with cakes, thanks to the owner of Mapleleaf cake shop. The owner actually donated all those cakes to the less fortunate. So cool.

Although my school holiday is 3 months but I have only one month break as I have commitments back in Singapore. When I left home, I feel so sad. Still feeling homesick. How could this happen to me?

My handsome bro and beautiful sister. :)

Right now I am having a flu, and I am quarantined in one of the rooms which is located at one corner of my hall. So lonely. I guess that is the reason why I have time to blog. LOL. I was so busy for the past few months as I was involve in the orientation committee. This sickness kinda buy me some time for myself at last.

NUS Rag Day falls on this Saturday and I am suppose to be in charge of leading cheer. I pray that I could be miraculously healed by today and I can start preparing for the cheer briefing session and be able to be there during the Rag Day event. I seriously do not want to miss it. That's all for now. Signing off.

p.s. Drink more water and don't fall sick. Take care

Exams finally over!!!

WoW! After one month of intensive studying, finally my exams finished just morning. I believe I have done my best, and I hope for the best too. :)

So on Sunday I will be flying back to Penang! Back to my home sweet home!

This one academic year has been tough, but I am glad that I have learned a lot. Next year will going to be a tough year with new challenges ahead of me. I pray that I will continue to stay focus and I hope I will excel in my studies as well as in some new commitments I am about to be involve in.

Malaysian line sucks, its a sad thing. Thinking of wanna online also very sien. But what to do? Guess I will be spending most of my time with my family members. Miss my mom and dad, bro and baby sis. By the way, my sis just turned 3 in February and now she is attending a kindergarten. So I will be bringing her to school everyday and go play with her at the playground every evening. So looking forward to that. Then, I will be bringing her and my mom to shopping centers. Going marketting with my mom in the morning. I just can't wait. It has been so long since I left home and I miss the old days when I was with my family.

My dad first thing asked me to paint the house gate. He said : "come back for one month, should be able to finish the gate la" Ok la. I don't mind. Lol... So happy to be home, I don't mind doing anything just to see my family again. I'm super homesick... But the suffering ends on Monday!

Just moved to my new holiday room which I will spend after one month plus back in Penang. I am involve in some holiday committee, planning ahead for next academic year's freshman orientation. Hopefully I can come out with great ideas. Getting to meet new juiniors is so exciting.

Signing off! Gotta take a nap and then am going cell group tonight! :)

Since central library opens for 24 hours, it is expected many of us students would mug (study) until the wee hours of the night. Just morning, early morning at 1.30am. When the students are mugging at Central Library, Spiderman appeared. I am sure Spiderman is looking for suspects of some criminal here in NUS. Now, who says Spiderman is not real!?

Lately, I've got the chance to perform in my hall's Formal Hall Dinner. I sang 4 songs which is Welcome to my Life (Simple Plan), You and Me(Lifehouse), I'm Yours(Jason Mraz) and I believe I Can Fly(R.Kelly). It is interesting working with the band for the first time.

To what extent is PM Lee Hsien Loong’s government different from his predecessors?

This semester I am taking the module on Government and Politics of Singapore which is a Political Science module. I've got an assignment which is to write this 2000+ words long essay on How different is PM Lee from his predecessors. Just wanna share with u guys. By the way, I got a B+. =)

Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong was appointed as the third prime minister of Singapore since 12 August 2004. A great responsibility was passed on to him to continue what his predecessors have done in Singapore which is providing security and delivering material prosperity for all, regardless of race. Before Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong stepped down as prime minister, speculations were made regarding the government under the soon- to-be Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong , for example, the government under PM Lee Hsien Loong would ensure the continuation of his father’s, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, policies. Chua Beng Huat, a Singapore sociologist, indicated that he did not expect any policy changes, although there was "definitely going to be a style difference". (Kammerer, 2004) However, after four years under the ruling of PM Lee and his government, it seems like PM Lee and his government had made some breakthroughs through the policies and developmental changes made, yet holding on to the core principles which his two predecessors governed Singapore by. Therefore, it can be observed that PM Lee is just adding a twist of flavor in Singapore politics and not yet ready to change the major governing principle which was carried down for decades.

First of all, the style of governance of MM Lee Kuan Yew back then when he was the Prime Minister was basically paternalistic or in other words dictatorship. Many scholars describe his governance as authoritarianism. MM Lee often makes decisions without consultation with the people. (Vasil, 1984) He proudly made statements after statements regarding his success in governing Singapore through his style of governance. Since Mr. Goh Chok Tong took over as the Prime Minister of Singapore, he had develop a new style of governance and declared his government as a “consultative government”. (Mutalib, 2009) During his reigning era as Prime Minister, he has introduced a Feedback Unit in 1985 to get the views and opinions of the citizens in Singapore. Perhaps the most important signal sent by the electorate to the PAP government was that Singaporeans wanted to be consulted and involved in the public policy-making process and to have more control over those decisions that affected their lives directly. Since PM Lee stepped up as Prime Minister until now, we can see that PM Lee and his government’s governing style is more incline towards SM Goh’s way of governance. In other words, PM Lee’s way of governance is more open compared to his father’s way of governance. A clear example is the willingness of the government to set up a blog called the P65 blog which is manned by the People’s Action Party’s Members of Parliament who were born after the year 1965. PM Lee shows much more of his sincerity towards his idea of openness towards Singaporeans which is that Singaporeans should be able to post political videos and campaign material on the Internet without running afoul of the law during the next General Elections. This kind of scenario is a joke under MM Lee Kuan Yew’s government back in his ruling period where MM Lee clearly stated during his speech that if he would govern Singapore without having to consult the people, he is much assured that the government could be even more effective. (Mutalib, 2004)

On PM Lee’s National Day Rally speech, he introduced a “five-day work week” for the public sector, which means that the half-working day on Saturday is ceased from 1 January 2005 onwards. (Tan, 2007) Besides that, PM Lee also proposed a two-month paid maternity leave as well as other financial incentives for new-born’s mothers. (Population) The intention was to encourage Singaporeans to have a more balanced lifestyle as Singaporeans are known to commit too much to their working life. Through these policies, Singaporeans are then able to spend more precious time with their families and also for others to start their own family. The main purpose is to curb the declining population problem in Singapore. These were the few policy changes that took place soon after PM Lee took over which was in line with what SM Goh did when he was the Prime Minister but a total contradict to what MM Lee Kuan Yew did while he was still the acting Prime Minister back in 1975.

Due to the different situation which occurs in Singapore if compared now to the past, the way policies which was made was totally different. During MM Lee Kuan Yew’s reign as the Prime Minister, in the 1960s, the rising birth rates, decreasing mortality rate and immigrations from peninsular Malaysia has resulted in a rapid population growth. (Population) The Singapore government then saw this as a threat to the political stability and living standards of the country. Therefore, the government introduced policies which encouraged later marriage and smaller families accompanied by campaigns urging parents to “Stop at Two”. On the other hand, in the 1980s when SM Goh was the Prime Minister, birth rates decline badly due to the success of the “Stop at Two” policy. This scenario alarms the government of that time. The old family planning slogan of "Stop at Two" was replaced by "Have Three or More, if You Can Afford It." The government under PM Goh took measures to encourage Singaporeans to produce more, such as paying Singaporeans to have children and setting aside $260 million incentives which included the Baby Bonus.

On 18 April 2005, the Singapore government announced about the decision to invest in two Integrated Resorts which is a euphemism for a casino-based development which will be located at Marina South and Sentosa. (Lee Hsien Loong) The objective of this proposal is to gain tourism attraction which will increase job opportunities as well up to 35,000 jobs. This decision is especially significant as the concept of opening casinos in Singapore had been mooted in earlier years, it was rejected by both of PM Lee’s predecessors and even by PM Lee himself when he was the deputy PM, citing reasons such as the presence of casinos in Singapore would bring about much social ills. However, the success of Macau was pertinent in the pressing forward for a good case to revisit the casino resort issue, PM Lee has decided to go against Singapore’s long held taboo and go on with the idea of building casinos despite critics from the citizens, opposition parties and his own ministers. PM Lee suggested that safeguards are to be implemented, such as prohibiting the minor ethnic groups from entering the casinos and charging a SGD$100 entrance fee for Singaporeans and permanent residents or SGD$2000 for a yearlong entrance fee to limit the negative social impact of casino gambling. (Lee Hsien Loong)

Although it may seem like PM Lee and his government are making many new policy changes and the style of governance which might seem as a total contradict to his predecessors, like the development of casinos and also the policy which encourages the population to keep on increasing, the core principle of pragmatism in the style of governance still holds within all three Prime Ministers of Singapore. This brings to the next point which is the similarity of PM Lee Hsien Loong’s government and his predecessors.

Since Mr. Lee Kuan Yew took over as Prime Minister in Singapore in 1959, the government in his cabinet are formed by members of the People’s Action Party, PAP. This trend continues as we can see that the government formed by PM Lee Hsien Loong are still made up of members of the PAP. Therefore, it is very unlikely that the direction of governance by PM Lee’s government will defer much from the previous government as the current government are led by their predecessors from the same party. Hence, the core principles of governing Singapore are being carried down from generation to generation. These core principles include pragmatism, meritocracy, incorruption, multi-culturalism, and having an open economy. To further explain the point of the influence of the previous government on PM Lee’s government is that PM Lee has been working along with them before being promoted to Prime Minister. PM Lee has been involved in various key ministries, such as Trade & Industry, Defence and Finance, acted as the chairman of two important governmental committees and served as a Deputy Prime Minister to his immediate predecessor, Mr. Goh Chok Tong, for a period of 14 years. Aside from that, many of his team ministers served under the leadership of his predecessor as well. It is apparent that PM Lee and some of his team ministers now were also the ones who contributed in formulating policies which was made before PM Lee stepped up as Prime Minister. The rationale behind why there are such major policy changes is because there is a greater demand for democracy from the younger generation and the emergence of young educated Singaporeans who expects more from the government. However, no matter how drastic the policy changes might be, PM Lee is still leading his government according to the same ideology, namely pragmatism. (Mutalib, 2009)

Furthermore, in MM Lee’s and SM Goh’s government back then, there was no more than one woman who has held the position of a minister at any one time to 1998. (Worthington, 2003) Even now in PM Lee’s ruling in the government, there has only been 20% MPs which is made up of women candidate as of year 2007. (AWARE on Women and Work) Even though SM Goh was committed to recruit more women into politics through the Women’s Wing when SM Goh was the Prime Minister, the effort turned out unsuccessful. Some might say that the PAP government had not been giving chances to women to participate in politics but interviews with women who have withdrawn from politics, their remarks is the inability to work together with the PAP government. (Worthington, 2003) In summary, we can conclude that the three generations of the PAP government has few women representative compared to the population of woman in Singapore which is also another similarity between PM Lee’s government and his predecessors.

To understand the government better, the team ministers who formed the government should be taken into account as well. The next point which will be discussed about is the difference between the team ministers which formed the government back in the 50’s compared to the government now in the 21st century. In the first generation of government which was led by the Prime Minister then Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, all of the team ministers received advanced education in England. (Tilman, 1989)They are made up of inexperienced leaders but with the passion to revive Singapore from the British colonization and the Japanese invasion. Instead, the third generation government under PM Lee Hsien Loong are made up of a younger team excluding MM Lee and SM Goh and the majority of the team ministers are graduated from different universities with excellent academic certification. (Mutalib, 2009) The team ministers are much more experienced in governing the country as many of them have been serving as ministers before being appointed to the current cabinet. An example can be seen in current Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore and Co-ordinating Minister for National Security, Professor S. Jayakumar. Before he is promoted to the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, he has been actively serving in various ministries in the government since 1981. (Cabinet Appointments, 2008) Besides Prof S. Jayakumar, there are also Members of the Parliament (MP) like MM Lee Kuan Yew, SM Goh Chok Tong, Mr. Wong Kan Seng, Mr. Lim Swee Say and a few other MPs who serve for decades in the PAP government. Another notable difference is that during the initial stages of the government led by MM Lee Kuan Yew when he was the Prime Minister, all the team ministers are Chinese except for Mr. Rajaratnam. Whereas, the government formed by PM Lee Hsien Loong comprises of more minorities comparatively to MM Lee’s government, for instance Professor S. Jayakumar, Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Mr. K Shanmugam, and Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan. This reveals that as time passes by, the government has realized the importance of representation of the minorities in the Parliament. This can also be observed through the implementation of the Group Representation Constituencies (GRC).

Conclusion, it should be stressed that the continuity of representation of government by the PAP leaders is the reason why there is still so much similarity in the government now as compared to the previous governments in Singapore. Although there is a difference in the style of governance and the leadership persona in the government, the Singapore government are still continuing the exact long held principles of governance. Besides that, with the existence of MM Lee Kuan Yew and SM Goh Chok Tong in the parliament, it is also very unlikely that PM Lee will somehow govern the country differently to a large extent. Based on what we can observe through his speeches and writings shows that PM Lee and together with his government is leading Singapore with much similarity in the political worldview as his predecessors. Hence, we can conclude that there is much more similarity between PM Lee’s government and his predecessors’ government.

DnD Pageant

Couple shot with Mae Yue

This Saturday is a night which I would most probably think back years later and wonder "How could this happen?" Lol. This Saturday is the my hall's Dinner and Dance night and I am one of the contestant in the pageant contest.(which I am still figuring how I got in at the first place)

Every block in my hall sent their representatives and I am representing my block which is F block. F block rocks man!!! Since the past few months we have been practising our dance every week. I am so not good in dancing, I just don't have the moves. I am hoping at least I don't trip and forget my moves, then mission accomplish.

Honestly, being the contestant for pageant is totally unexpected. First of all, I don't have the height and the body. Besides, there are other much good looking guys in my block. Anyways, I am in. Haiz... I am guessing the guy "T" who commented in my chatbox saying that I think as if I am so zai (geng) besides starting his comment with vulgarity, would probably read this and criticize again. However, I just want to share that I lead my life with a principle, which is to be thankful for every single small things in my life, including friends. Instead of focusing on the failures in my life, I prefer to focus on the good things that happen which I believe will encourage me to excel in my life as well as using my experience to encourage friends who needs encouragement.

Coming here to Singapore is already a miracle. My father who strongly wanted me to continue my education in Malaysia has finally agreed to support me to study here in NUS. Thus, it is my vow to strive and excel in various ways to make my dad's investment worthwhile. I was reluctant to leave my family because of our close bondage and I will miss them a lot. But I guess there are things in life which I want to pursue which led me being here in the end.

Back to DnD, I am thankful to those who supported me. Although I know there are only a few of you guys, but I am very thankful and I appreciate you guys. :-)

This is the link to the Q&A which I've gone through.

A TURNOVER

Remember last week I was very down because of not being recognized by the hall. I was sad but I definitely did not expect what actually happened next.

I was so down that I turned to a senior in my hall whom I trust a lot. First of all, it was him who accompanied me to church during my early days in Singapore. He was in choir, a capella and also part of the hallplay committee together with me. So we know each other quite well. I was just hoping for some advice to get over this situation but instead out of my expectations, he actually helped to put my name in the Outstanding Freshman Award nominees. I was shocked and happy as well. I felt really greatful, not so much because of finally being the nominee for the award but much more than that, which is the feeling of being helped by a friend does feel great. I realized I wasn't alone after all.

Special note : "Thank you, Louis" (if you are reading this)

So just being a nominee is enough for me, because at least now I know the hall recognizes my effort and also getting to know a friend who cares.

I was feeling very contented but I found out today that I was one of the finalist for the award.
I was so excited. An email was sent to me to attend the Dinner and Dance event which the prize giving will be held. By the way, I was not the only finalist but together with my other great friends, Ken Juin, Jun Keat and Nicholas. All 3 of them worked with me before. Nicholas, Ken Juin and I worked together to make Malaysian Night a success. Nicholas and I were the Assisstant Manager for Hallplay, Jun Keat was the Marketing Head for Hallplay as well. Ken Juin and I were in choir and a capella together. Jun Keat and I are also the Male Pageant finalist, with Nicholas as our dance choreographer and the Vice-president of Dinner and Dance. For further info, the pageant contest will commence on the same day as the award giving event. Jun Keat, Ken Juin and I are also in the programme department for next year's Hall Orientation committee.

I was so excited to learn that the 3 of them are together with me in the finalist for the Male Outstanding Freshman Award. It was so fun working together with them. And now, we are in this award together. I don't care who wins the award but I feel that this experience is so unpredictable and too coincidental. 3 of them were the ones working along with me most of the time in hall. I really felt happy for them.

Looks like good things had happened more than what I can imagine. I really thank my Father in Heaven for the things he has done in my life.

This link is the link to the web page of the finalist for the Awards. Only for those who are interested to have a look.

安静

Hello,

I would like to share a song which I sang lately called 安静.

Hope you like it.

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Hey,

I checked my previous videos on my com. And I realized this song which I randomly sung one year ago while working for Maxis (a telecommunications company in Malaysia) as the promoter. It was after work that time. Song Huan, my best friend was shooting me in this video.

An interesting fact is that afternoon I participated in an eating competition. It was held by Nando's. The winner is the one who finished the Super Spicy half of a chicken fastest. I ate very fast, without chewing at all, just swallow and I got SECOND PLACE! So happy, but guess what prize I got? 2 bottles of extra spicy peri peri sauce, which is more pungent than chilli sauce or chilli padi. Haiz...

I hope you all enjoy this randomly sung chinese song called 背叛.

Hit The Road Jack

Hey guys,

I was super busy lately with a lot of Co-Curricular Activities.

Today I am going to show you guys a production I was involved on mid 2008.

I was approached by a friend I know when I was involved in a dance performance way back during November 2006. During that period I was also in Project Superstar 2 in Malaysia and successfully made it to the top 50 (that is another story though).

So my friend called me up for this production of a Music Video for a local movie production and the title of the song is Hit The Road Jack. But I was not alone in this journey. I have my 2 close friends Jacob and Song Huan who joined with me. We were paid RM100 for one night so that was one of the reason that attracted me. This Music Video includes 10 guys and a girl. The story line is that this girl has 10 boy friends and one day all of them found out and decided to dump her together. We were told that after recording, we will be provided with Tuxedo to film the Music video.

The location is at Hits Recording Studio which many famous artists did their recordings there, Jacky Cheung was there recording his album Black and White. So it was quite exciting being in that place. I was even excited when I see my other friends who are in the music industry there as well, unexpected. Some of them are real famous local singers (I do not think revealing their names here is wise). Anyway, I met some of them in my earlier concert performance with a band called Live Station which I was one of the lead singer back in year 2007.

The 10 of us guys were there and were wondering who the lead female singer would be. To my amazed there was Paris Ais Philips walking in the door. I was in total shock. She was in the top 10 of Who Wants to Be a Model TV programme in Malaysia. WOW!!! By the way, she looks beautiful up close as well as in TV.

Unfortunately, I left the production due to my studies. I came to Singapore just one month after that and could not continue with the recordings. Anyway, great experience and I got RM100 for singing one night. That feels great.

I am going to show a video of the recording in Hits Recording Studio. Enjoy...

(By the way, I am in green shirt in the video)

sQuba - Lotus Elise

Do you remember watching James Bond in one of his movies entitled The Spy Who Loved Me?

I am not sure but according to what I read, the car he used in that movie can actually run in water. It might seem like impossible but lately Lotus did it. Swiss custom car designer Frank M. Rinderknetch turn a Lotus Elise which looks like this one below ( a typical Lotus Elise)

to THIS!!

I got to know about this car while reading the Discovery Channel Magazine.

What the magazine says about this car?

" the Lotus Elise makeover does come equipped with goggles and oxygen masks. But you'll definitely get soaked if you take the plunge. Rinderknecht, CEO of Rinspeed Inc, said he designed the sQuba without a top so the car wouldn't be overly buoyant and, oh yeah, also so occupants could get out quickly in an emergency. The interior , of course, is water resistant.

The US$1.5 million prototype looks sleek, but top land speed is only 113 kph and once the two-seater hits water it slows down considerably. On top of the waves, it goes up to 5 kph and underwater only 3 kph, to a depth of 10 metres. It has three electric motors - one for the propellers - plus two jet drives in the front.

Rinderknecht does not see a big market for the car. It's a toy, he says, for rich people.

Malaysian Night '08 - Identity

Malaysian Night is an event which King Edward VII Hall (the hall which I am staying) held it annually. It aims to gather Malaysians here in the hall to accomplish something together besides preparing us for the upcoming co-curricular activities which we are to take part in our hall.

In this event, I volunteered to be the Programme Coordinator. My job scale is to plan the programs for Malaysian Night and make sure all the programs would be presentable for the night of the event.

A lot of time were spent on planning besides

King Edward VII Hallplay

King Edward VII Hallplay 08/09 Steering Committee

Sorry for not blogging for the past few days. I was busy with a play by the hall (hostel) which I am currently staying which is King Edward VII Hall.

I signed up to be a part of this major event in King Edward VII Hall. To try something different, instead of signing up as cast (because I have experience in doing dramas), I decided to sign up for stage crew. To my surprise, I was appointed as the Assistant Stage Manager. My role as an Assistant Stage Manager is to call cues, assign stage crews to their respective props and the props movement, besides having meetings with the main committees of this play.

Last week was an intensive practice for Hallplay. We had dry runs and trainings everyday. It was fun but I can feel the pressure and stress emerging in me as well. Anyway, everything works fine.

The title of this year's Hallplay is Pygmalion. The play is about a poor flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, who sells flowers by the street, speaks rudely and do not know how to carry herself appropriately. But then one day a professor by the name of Higgins spotted her and made a bet with an Englishman name Pickering that he (Higgins) is able to transform Eliza to a Duchess in 6 months.

This play is interesting and funny. The stage props are well done and looks great. I am going to upload the pictures next time. Anyway, below is the picture of the stage crew.

A Follow Up On Wei Yi Toilet Version ( Lee Hom ) Video

Today I was shocked to see this in the statistics and data column in the Wei Yi Toilet Version youtube page...

Many things was going on in my mind when I see this. This website actually links to LeeHom's fan website.

Firstly, I am very grateful if what I did was recognized by LeeHom fans. At least what I did was worth it after all. But later I realized that this is quite unlikely to happen. I feel more likely LeeHom fans are criticizing me for disgracing LeeHom's song. LOL...

But that is not all I want to show you guys today. There is a blog which recognized my creativity too! ^^

Quote :" Wow, How creative yet artistically masterful"

I hope those who have seen this video really enjoy it!

WoW! They all sounded so interesting. Really looking forward to Semester 2 of my 1st year here in NUS!!!

My Blog is 1 Week Old!!!

I would like to wish all of my friends a Merry Happy New Year. May all your wishes come true and may blessings continue to flow into your life from heaven above.

I guess many have experienced a fantastic countdown to year 2009 with your family and friends. Some might just be sitting comfortably on their couch and watch countdown on television. Regardless of whichever way we celebrate this new year, the spirit of the new year dwells in each and every one of us.

I have read through many friend's blogs with their New Year Resolution, which is good. I can see the eagerness to excel and to prosper in their lives in various ways : studies, health, and etc.

I have some advice which I want to give to all my friends as a New Year blessing on how to get a clearer picture of your needs and wants for the New Year. Just follow the acronym S.M.A.R.T. Which also means that we have to plan smart.

S - Your goals have to be SPECIFIC. You might want to list them down.

M - How would you MEASURE your success? : You would not know your goals being attained until you give your goals a target. For example, lets say your goal is to be fitter, so how fit is fitter to you? Some might say until I get 6 packs only my goal is fulfilled. Some might mean losing some weight and having a slimmer body.

A - Describe your ACTION PLANS : So having listed down your goals, what are you going to do about it? What is your step to step to-do plans? Example, for the same goal of getting fitter, maybe you can say I will exercise 3 times a week and eat healthier.

R - Are your goals REALISTIC? : Is it doable? Yes or No? Make your goals realistic, maybe your CAP was 2.5, do not aim to get 5.0. There is nothing wrong with aiming that high. But is this doable. You might say it is possible if you study harder, but how hard is harder? Are you going to the extend where you strive so much in your studies and you neglected socializing, exercising, building up relationships, relaxation? Why not aim for a CAP 4.0 instead which is more doable and you do not have to sacrifice other equally important aspects of your life.

T - What is your TIME frame for these goals? : When do you expect to achieve those goals? Maybe you want to give yourself 6 months to lose 10 pounds. For studies maybe give yourself one semester to judge your progress.

This is not the end. To plan SMART is not enough. You have to plan SMARTER!

E - EXPECTATION MANAGEMENT. Under what circumstances will you consider adjustments? : Maybe for the person with CAP 2.5 aiming 4.0 in the following semester, but turns out to be that he or she gets 3.5 only. So we need to be mentally prepared that our goals might not be fulfilled 100%. At least in this case that person improved. Maybe for him or her, this result is still not good enough. So what adjustments would you take if you did not achieve your ultimate goal? Maybe in this same case, he or she have to study smarter instead of harder? Maybe study groups might be more effective rather than studying alone?

R - REVELATION. Write a promise or verse from the Bible that supports these goals : For example, Deuteronomy 28:13 ~ "and the Lord will make you the Head and NOT the Tail, you shall be above only and not beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today and are careful to observe them" &
Joshua 1:8 ~"This book of Law shall not depart from your mouth but you shall meditate it day and night that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success."
1 Peter 2:24 ~"Jesus, who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree (cross), that we having died to sins, might live for righteousness - by whose stripes you were healed."

The Bible is there to support your goals. So that it is not you who wants to do well but God, your heavenly Father, who loves each and everyone of us wants us to be successful and healthy and joyful. Enjoying our lives on earth with abundant blessings which flows like a river.
So besides working hard for yourselves, you will be assured that God (who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us ~Ephesians 3:20) is more than willing to fight together with you.

I hope you guys learn something by reading this. Let us work hard together on the path to excellence! Lets do it with all our might (mental and physical strength) and do it right!
